Fitness
Level:
Team members are required to maintain a level of fitness that allows
them to safely accomplish their assignments. Search and Technical team
assignments are considered strenuous, and members are required to be
prepared for a minimum of 24 hours stay in a wilderness environment.
Past
or Current Search and Rescue Experience:
Past search and rescue experience will be considered on an individual
basis. New members with past experience may have to show proficiency.
New members who are currently volunteering and in good standing
with another Search and Rescue team may be able to use monthly team
training with that team to fulfill some of the JOSAR requirements. This
is at the discretion of the JOSAR Supervisor.
Team
Communication System and Callouts:
The team primarily disseminates information to team members via email
and cell phone/pager text messaging. Callouts are primarily done by
phone/pager. Members are not required to have a pager or cell phone.
Members are strongly encouraged to have a valid email address. For members
with no computer access, exceptions can be made.
Minimum
Equipment and Costs:
All members are required to have a minimum amount of equipment in order
to participate in team activities (see
Minimum Equipment List). Most outdoor enthusiast (hikers, climbers,
backpackers) will have many of the items required. The cost of this
equipment will vary. Discounts on some equipment are available to team
members. Most new members can expect an initial cost of $250 - $500.
The required minimum equipment is NOT required for new members to participate
in training. New members, especially technical team members, will have
an opportunity to borrow equipment during their probationary period.
New members will benefit from seeing other team member's equipment prior
to purchasing their own.
Personal
equipment that is required will be replaced if damaged or lost during
an incident. Personal equipment that is not required may be replaced
if damaged or lost during an incident at the discretion of the park.
The
Minimum Equipment List is subject to change with notice from the park
SAR coordinator.
